The seed that grew into Sara Gruen's bestselling Water for Elephants came from a newspaper feature about a photographer who followed train circuses during the Great Depression. A "stunning" photo in the article led Gruen on a long path of research, including a visit with an ex-elephant handler, and the concoction of a smashing good tale of circus life.
