The e-publishing shakedown

Four years ago, writer's groups and newsletters buzzed with talk about electronic publishing. Many predicted that it would transform the world for authors, allowing them to reach more readers with new, innovative books that traditional publishers "didn't want." Some even boasted that e-books would eliminate print books by 2005. Others feared the new technology was a death knell for print books. As well-known authors climbed aboard the e-book express, major publishers began to launch e-publishing divisions, and independent e-publishers sprouted like mushrooms after a rain.
