More on selling reprints

Published: April 3, 2007
The May 2007 issue of The Writer included an article by four experienced freelance writers about "the fine art" of getting multiple sales from one topic. One of the writers, Gary M. Stern, described his successful experiences in selling multiple reprints of his humorous article about "Sid Caesar's writing gang." Here is some basic information about selling reprints:

    • You get the right to resell an article word-for-word after its initial publication if you've sold only first North American rights, or first rights, to the initial publisher. That gives the magazine the right to be the first publisher of your article.

    • After the article appears in print, you're free to offer reprint rights to other publishers.

    • Signing a work-for-hire agreement, in contrast, gives all future rights to the magazine, not the writer.
