Writing prompt No. 2

A weekly writing exercise to get you started

By Heather Wright
Published: July 8, 2011
Think of something that your character wasted in the past—money, time, a relationship, someone’s trust. How does that event color what your character is doing today, and how does it influence your character's choices?

Heather Wright's work has been published in local and national publications and on the Web. Her column “Write Angles,” published in What If? Canada’s Creative Magazine for Teens, became the basis of her book, Writing Fiction: A Hands-On Guide for Teens.

Angie checked the balance of her account. She marveled. $3,142.26! She had never had that much money to her name in all her life. Funny. When she was working, making loads of money, she was always broke. Now here she was on Social Security, selling extra fruits and vegetables and the occasional jam, and finally, somehow, she had all this money. Could it be her somewhat raggedy clothing and shoes? (The stuff in the closet stopped fitting long before it wore out, yet, somehow she couldn't get herself to give it away or sell it. Perhaps it was the hope it would someday fit, even if she had to wait until it was once again in fashion. Vintage is what they call it. Nice stuff from the 60's, 70's and 80's. Probably worth a pretty penny.)

Just what I need. I'm doing background material for a novel right now--two characters had a relationship in high school. As adults--a number of years later--they meet again. Their break up--and the reasons for it--influence both of them in different ways.
