What does your character need to have the best start to his or her day? Eight hours sleep? Two cups of coffee? Music? News radio? What happens when his or her favorite morning routine goes wrong?

Heather Wright's work has been published in local and national publications and on the Web. Her column “Write Angles,” published in What If? Canada’s Creative Magazine for Teens, became the basis of her book, Writing Fiction: A Hands-On Guide for Teens.

6 hours, 7 hours of sleep, what's the difference. Some coffee, of course, that'll do the trick. Sip it in slowly as you listen to instrumental music, soundtracks, some celtic, whatever does the trick to take you back in time and into another dimension. Close your eyes, let the coffee get into your system, sintonizing with the music, imagine yourself somewhere else, anywhere else, picture the scene around you. Can you feel it bubbling inside? Yes, it's inspiration. Open laptop. WRITE!

Coffee, yes. A little something to eat (maybe an egg) to get me started. Need to read the newspaper (yep, an actual newspaper!) and check stuff online as well. Then it's march yourself up those stairs, young lady, and get to writing!
