Advice for the new writer

By Rebecca Vinyard

In the last week, I received three e-mails that all had one thing in common. They were from beginning writers who didn't know where or how to begin. Each had oodles of story ideas. Their characters carried on conversations in their heads. They all had the desire to write but didn't have a clue how to get started.

I felt sorry for them. They felt so alone, as if something was wrong with them for having the ideas, the character conversations--the desire to be writers. This article is for all of you who find yourself in that state--to let you know you are not alone. And probably not crazy either.

Although, to be honest, I've always thought you had to be a bit nuts to want to be a writer in the first place.

So this one's for all you wannabe writers. I hope you'll find the advice and encouragement you need to face that ominous blank page.
