Finding contacts in unlikely places

"Don't think an idea unpursued for years is dead -- often you can revisit it. But if you ignore opportunity's knocks too many times, she may stop knocking." -Sharon McDonnell, author of You're Hired! Secrets to a Successful Job Search.

My first book was published not only without an agent, but without ever having met anyone in book publishing, except for a chance meeting with a publisher a few years before. Cupid, Couples & Contracts: A Guide to Living Together, Prenuptial Agreements, and Divorce, which I wrote in its entirety for divorce lawyer Lester Wallman, was published by the first publisher who received my book proposal. It was even featured on Good Morning America, a real coup--especially for a first-time author.

Getting my first book contract jump-started my freelance writing career in 1993. I quit my job as senior vice president at a PR agency in New York City and have supported myself ever since as a freelance writer and author of now five books. My story shows how book contracts and collaborators can be found in the most unexpected places.
