Turn freelance setbacks into opportunities

By Jennifer Lawler

As a martial artist, I apply the principles of the martial arts to my writing career. When I run into difficulties, I simply do what Bruce Lee would do (although I have had to stop throwing editors over my left shoulder).

Imitating Bruce Lee taught me that you can turn obstacles into opportunities. When I had trouble learning the jump spinning wheel kick, I developed the necessary determination and mental discipline to master the move. When I lost every time I sparred a certain opponent, I forced myself to try new techniques--and became a better fighter in the process. I learned that what looks like a roadblock can actually be an opportunity for growth.

The same held true for my writing career. When a book contract was canceled after I'd spent several years writing the book, I wanted to toss the manuscript in the trash. Instead, I held onto my work and queried other publishers, winding up with a two-book deal. If I'd decided that the canceled contract meant the book was terrible, I'd be missing out on some delightful royalties.
