November 10, 2005 Inspiration for Aloft: It's a book that I've been thinking about for a long time. There's not necessarily an inspiration. The book kind of had a spark, just in terms of sitting down to actually write it. I'd been thinking about this story for a long time, and the setting--the suburbs, and the spark was taking a plane ride, just as the narrator does at the beginning of the book. So that got me thinking that perhaps this was a book that had enough material in it and was complicated enough that I could write it.
