Genre organizations
Published: May 27, 2005 Each of these organizations has a magazine as well as an online forum or newsletter and regional chapters. Some require professional credits for full membership, but you can still subscribe to the publications and visit the public pages of their Web sites. They host annual national conventions, plus smaller regional events.
Horror Writers Association (HWA) June. Offers mentoring and members-only anthologies. www.horror.org
Mystery Writers of America (MWA) April. Many discounts available to members. www.mysterywriters.org
Romance Writers of America (RWA) July. Dozens of contest leads. www.rwanational.org
Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI) August and February. Grants for new works and works in progress. www.scbwi.org
Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) April. Members must meet strict qualifications www.SFWA.org
World Science Fiction Convention Labor Day. A gathering of about 5,000 fans and professionals www.worldcon.org
World Fantasy Convention November. A small, professional convention. www.worldfantasy.org
