Tips from "6 ways to pull readers into your fiction"

By William G. Tapply

"Readers...do not pick up a novel or short story hoping to applaud the author. They don't think of themselves as your audience..."

  1. "Forget about becoming a great writer. Work instead on writing great stories."

  2. Use figures of speech such as simile and metaphor sparingly. Overuse can distract your reader and spoil your story.

  3. Do not use over-inflated or "flowery" language.

  4. Simple, forthright prose focuses attention on your writing rather than on your intentions.

  5. Write clear and concise sentences that create pictures that your reader can see and emotions your readers can feel.

  6. Master the mechanics of writing. Use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.
