More on convincing characters
Published: May 26, 2006 In the July 2006 issue of The Writer, Corey Blake offered an approach to creating multidimensional characters in fiction. Here is some additional material from him on the topic.
Workout
Put two of your fully developed characters in the same room. Implement two or three increases in stress for one character and two or three decreases in stress for the other and let the two characters bounce off each another.
Go into this exercise with no preconceived notions of what might happen. If you've done your homework, the characters should affect each other.
If you need a jumpstart, add some element--whether tangible or emotional--that character 1 needs from the other, and give character 2 a strong reason for not wanting to provide it.
