In the November 2008 issue of The Writer, Erika Dreifus talks with four MFA graduates who found gratifying work in nonteaching positions at colleges and universities. Below is her breakdown of what you can expect to make in these types of jobs, along with what professors typically earn.

The 2007-'08 salary surveys for higher education administered by the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) cites the following median salary figures (all data from www.higheredjobs.com):

For faculty in English language and literature/letters:
Professor: $76,793
Associate professor: $59,949
Assistant professor: $49,528
New assistant professor: $48,289
Instructor: $39,834

For senior-level administrators:
Director, marketing
All institutions: $74,940
Doctoral: $91,859
Master's: $74,880
Baccalaureate: $65,000
Two-year: $64,639

For mid-level administrators:
Editor
All institutions: $46,497
Doctoral: $46,298
Master's: $44,166
Baccalaureate: $53,871
Two-year: $43,672
