Writing prompt No. 5

A weekly writing exercise to get you started

Think of veins. Think of them flowing with healthy blood, tracing delicate patterns in leaves, leaving cruel blue patterns on an old woman’s legs, holding a rich deposit of gold, mutilated by drug use, taking in life-saving medication. Choose one vein of thought and write what you imagine.

Heather Wright's work has been published in local and national publications and on the Web. Her column “Write Angles,” published in What If? Canada’s Creative Magazine for Teens, became the basis of her book, Writing Fiction: A Hands-On Guide for Teens.

Yikes! This prompt was written by someone young. “Cruel blue patterns on an old woman’s legs”? Right. Better “cruel blue patterns on an old woman’s legs” than the alternative, as in dead. LOL. Sorry, I do find it too funny. Someday, someone (hint, hint) will find a piece of paper with those words and wonder 'what was I thinking?'. Since, according to my genealogy, I'm a descendant of one Niall of the Nine Hostages, from his son's Fiachu side, I guess I'll take it as a compliment. Yeah, nice and blue. My favorite color.
