DAWN MILLER from MARYLAND said:
Ice lies as a gift glowing soft under a moon
as clear as the map for footsteps lying motionless
in eternal dust, far and far
the flag without wind casting slow shadows
where the sun swings, lamp of worlds.
Ice cast and far flung under stars
and ice lying sleek and shining in the lamp from my window.

Clutching the crumpled map in her hand she stood in front of the ice cave feeling the coolness greet her, waves of chill emanating from the cave interior. The desolation around her both intrigued and frightened her. What would happen if she slipped and lost consciousness, if her supplies were lost in a fall? She was alone and determined to be the first human to plunge into this dark, cold abyss in spite of her worries that she was not as prepared as she expected herself to be six months ago when she decided to take her spelunking to the limit. Standing in front of the cave, illuminated by moonlight she questioned her motives. A year ago she never would have soloed - until her love of caving brought her to this little known wonder. Most extreme cavers travel in groups not only for the camaraderie of discovery, but also for safety. She turned her back on it all, instead wanting the thrill of discovery, the gift of infamy to be all hers.

I walked out of my apartment with the little lamp on my desk still glowing brightly in the darkness of the night. The moon was shinning brightly in the sky, guiding my way to my little red jeep. I was carefully watching my steps on the cobble stone pathway to my jeep as I could see a thin layer of ice still on the stones from the previous snowstorm. I placed the last gift for my parents on the passenger's seat and reached over to the console for my map. I froze when I heard this horrible howling piercing the night's quietness.
