Register Now to
“Make Your Characters All They Can Be!”

ENLIST TODAY FOR:
- Hands-on workshops with industry experts
- Drills on how to best present your characters in queries, synopses, and first pages
- Optional one-on-one critiques with agents and editors

WORKSHOP OPTIONS INCLUDE

Heather Alexander [Assistant Editor at Dial Books for Young Readers] on Voice Lessons
All the best characters have a unique and recognizable voice, but how do you strike the balance between a natural, authentic kid voice, and one that is memorable? And how does voice reveal character? Workshop participants will hear examples of character-driven narrative, and take part in writing exercises designed to capture this elusive make-it-or-break-it quality.

Mary Kole [Senior Literary Manager, Movable Type] on Crafting Complex Characters
An in-depth and interactive workshop on character objective, motivation, and interiority that will help you write unstoppable protagonist's for today's demanding children's book market. With a special focus on adding layers and depth to your fictional people, this workshop will also help you strive for authenticity in your work and avoid clichés in order to create someone fresh and irresistible on the page.

Anita Nolan [Author] on Shaping Up Your Query
Want to make your first page or query letter the best it can be? This workshop will focus on what information should be included in the first pages of a manuscript and in a query letter, and common first page and query problems. During the workshop, we'll look at bits and pieces from the pages and letters submitted in advance as well as the first pages of published novels to evaluate successful elements, common problems, and how to fix them. We will not read entire first pages or query letters, just a sentence or a paragraph from them to illustrate points.
