Fiction contests held every month with various themes. Word counts 1,500-20,000 and genres range from family matters, to open fiction, to short story award for new writers.

Iowa Short Fiction Award

Submit a previously unpublished collection of short stories of at least 150 pages. Manuscripts that have been published in periodicals are not eligible. Authors cannot have a published book of fiction. Submit between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30 by postal mail only.

The St. Lawrence Book Award

Submit an unpublished collection of poetry or short stories by online submission manager. Open to any writer who has not yet published a full-length collection of short stories or poems. Submission period: July 1-Aug. 31. 45-90 pages for poetry, 120-280 pages for fiction.

Society of Southwestern Authors Writing Contest

Submit short story, 2,500 words max; personal essay/memoir, 2,500 words max; or poetry, 40 lines max. Send four copies of each entry. All winning entries will be published in the 2013 edition of SSA’s The Story Teller. All entries will receive judge’s comments.
