Prairie Fire Contests

Accepting entries for the Banff Centre Bliss Carman Poetry Award and Short Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction Contests. Fiction entries should be one story of up to 10,000 words; creative nonfiction is one article up to 5,000 words. One poetry entry can be one, two or three poems with a total max of 150 lines.

Semiannual contest for unpublished chapbooks or poems or short stories 16-36 pages long. Submission period: April 1-May 31 and Sept. 1-Oct. 31 via online submission manager.

Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Contest

Sponsored by Tom Howard Books, the contest is open for poems in any style or theme. The Margaret Reid Prize awards poems with regular meter and/or rhyme or is written in a recognized poetic form. The Tom Howard Prize is given to the best poem of any style.

Brittingham and Pollak Poetry Prize

Awarded annually to the two best book-length manuscripts of original poetry submitted in an open competition. Submissions are considered for both prizes. Submit manuscripts between 60 and 90 pages. Submission period Sept. 1-30.

Robert Watson Literary Prizes

Entries must be previously unpublished and fiction entries should be no longer than 25 typed, double-spaced pages. Poetry entries can include any number of poems up to 10 pages. Submit via Submittable or regular mail (make sure to mark outside of envelope “Fiction” or “Poetry”).

Terrain.org Annual Contest for Fiction, Nonfiction and Poetry
