The Friend: A Novel by Sigrid Nunez

The last novel on our list revolves around a grieving woman and a huge Great Dane, who the protagonist must adopt after a dear friend, the dog’s owner, commits suicide. NPR calls it “a penetrating, moving meditation on loss, comfort, memory.” The Friend is Nunez’s seventh novel, and she’s been the recipient of numerous literary honors over the year: a Berlin Prize Fellowship, a Whiting Writer’s award, and the Rosenthal Foundation Award and the Rome Prize in Literature. She’s also a Bread Loaf former faculty member with bylines appearing in The New York Times, The Paris Review, Harper’s, and McSweeney’s.
