Meet the five authors vying for the 2019 Costa Book of the Year award

The winner will be announced at a ceremony on January 28.

First novel: The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins

Sara Collins’ debut novel stars Frannie Langton, a former slave accused of the double murder of her employers, a famous scientist and his wife. Langton doesn’t remember what happened the night of the murder when she was found covered in her employers’ blood, but she has plenty of other stories from her life to share with readers about her life as she awaits trial. “Collins’s propulsive spine-tingler uses the conventions of historical fiction but infuses the genre with edgy beauty,” praised O: The Oprah Magazine, naming the book as one of the magazine’s “Best Books by Women of Summer 2019.”
