Meet the five authors vying for the 2019 Costa Book of the Year award

The winner will be announced at a ceremony on January 28.

Poetry: Flèche by Mary Jean Chan

The title of Mary Jean Chan’s debut collection – the French word for ‘arrow’ – is an offensive maneuver used in fencing, a sport Chan played when she was younger. “Much like the fencer who must constantly read and respond to her opponent’s tactics during a fencing bout, this debut collection by Mary Jean Chan deftly examines relationships at once conflictual and tender,” explains the publisher (Faber & Faber). Though Flèche is her first collection, it isn’t Chan’s first award-winning publication: Her pamphlet A Hurry of English was chosen as the 2018 Poetry Book Society Summer Pamphlet Choice.
