All Gold Canyon

Fair warning: This is where the adaptations become much less straightforward. Most of the stories told in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, an anthology of short Western films, come purely from the minds of Ethan and Joel Coen. There seem to be two exceptions, however. “The Gal Who Got Rattled” seems to be inspired at least partly by a short story by Stewart Edward White called “The Girl Who Got Rattled.” And “All Gold Canyon” is based on a Jack London story of the same name. So while it’s tough to nail down literary influences for all six episodes, these two story inspirations are why the film is in the Adapted Category. The Coen Brothers have been nominated for numerous writing Oscars over the years, including wins for Fargo and No Country for Old Men.
