A Star is Born: Judy Garland and the Film that Got Away

Okay, you got us: Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut wasn’t based on a film. Rather, it’s based on a Barbra Streisand 1976 adaptation, which was based on a 1954 Judy Garland movie, which was based on a 1937 film starring Janet Gaynor, which is speculated to be based on the real-life marriage of Frank Fay and Barbara Stanwyck. But we do have some recommended reading if you enjoyed the famous Judy Garland adaptation. A Star is Born: Judy Garland and the Film that Got Away is written by Garland’s own daughter, Lorna Luft. “This semi-biographical book is everything you’ll ever want to know about Garland’s 1954 version but never thought to ask,” writes the New York Journal of Books.
