The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
Next on our list is the undisputed queen of horror: Shirley Jackson. If reading “The Lottery” gave you goosebumps in grammar school, imagine what Jackson can do with a full novel. As the name indicates, The Haunting of Hill House, published in 1959, is a haunted house tale, one that Jackson renders especially well. And now is the perfect time to read this particular novel: Netflix is releasing a series based on the book on October 12th, and it’s been spectacularly reviewed by critics so far.
