Debut novelists swept fiction sales in the first half of 2019.

Which novelists are burning up the sales charts, according to Amazon’s list of bestselling books of the year so far? While nonfiction generally outpaces adult fiction on the bestseller charts – six of the top 10 bestselling titles are nonfiction and three are books for children or middle-grade readers – fiction for adults still holds court on the list in a variety of genres. And while one of the names on our list is a bestselling powerhouse author, the other four names may surprise you.

Here are the bestselling novels of 2019 so far. (Note: In the interest of highlighting bestselling new releases, we only included novels published in 2018 or 2019 on this list, so while Harper Lee’s 1960 classic To Kill a Mockingbird technically outsold The Mister, we did not include it below.)

1. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

The top book on Amazon’s 2019 bestseller list isn’t Michelle Obama’s top-selling memoir Becoming, Tara Westover’s acclaimed Educated, or Rachel Hollis’ megapopular self-help book Girl, Wash Your Face: It’s a debut novel published late last summer that became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller and a selection for Reese Witherspoon’s book club. The “painfully beautiful” (The New York Times Book Review) novel focuses on the Kya Clark, nicknamed the “Marsh Girl” because she lives alone and undisturbed in the marshes of small-town North Carolina – until she becomes a suspect in a murder case, resulting in a book that’s “both a coming-of-age tale and an engrossing whodunit,” writes Real Simple.
