3. The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris
Third on the list is a work of historical fiction based on the true story of Lale Sokolov, a tattooist working in Auschwitz-Birkenau. The Tattooist of Auschwitz, a No. 1 New York Times bestseller, is screenwriter Heather Morris’ debut novel. Morris met Sokolov in 2003 and the two became friends. She originally shaped Sokolov’s story into a screenplay before seeking publication for the novel Kirkus called “a powerful, gut-wrenching tale that is hard to shake off.”
