Easily the most controversial book on this list, Jeanine Cummins’ latest novel has received landmark sales since its publication in January, amidst an abundance of criticism from Latinx writers and critics that led Cummins’ publisher to cancel the book tour. Cummins, who has identified as white, wrote a story of a Mexican woman and her son attempting to immigrate to the U.S. Oprah Winfrey selected American Dirt for her book club, which undoubtedly boosted sales. Winfrey hosted a special edition of her AppleTV show to discuss her decision and allow Latinx critics to air their complaints.
