Fall Fiction Preview 2019: 5 hot YA novels to preorder now

From haunting speculative horror to gripping historical fiction, this season's YA offerings are a vibrant and exciting bunch.

Pet by Akwaeke Emezi

One of the most hotly anticipated YA books of fall is easily Akwaeke Emezi’s Pet, which stars Jam, a selectively nonverbal and transgender teen, her best friend Redemption, and a horned, clawed, monster-hunting creature named Pet who appears after Jam bleeds on one of her mother’s paintings. Though human monsters were thought to be extinct, Pet tells Jam there’s still one lurking in her town – and it lives in Redemption’s house. The book is the YA debut for Akwaeke Emezi, who previously earned accolades and award nominations for their adult debut, Freshwater.

In a starred review, School Library Journal calls it “a riveting and important read that couldn’t be more well timed to our society’s struggles with its own monsters.”
