The Amityville Horror
The Amityville Horror, released in 1979, has the distinction of being one of the most profitable indie films of its time, but it drew its roots from Jay Anson’s thrilling 1977 book about a series of real events that happened on Long Island. The book was originally published as nonfiction, recounting the events surrounding a supposedly haunted house in Amityville, though the facts in Anson’s book have been much contended and Amazon now lists the book as fiction. That said, Anson’s retelling of the haunted house in Amityville has created much fodder for Hollywood, inspiring more than a dozen films over the years.
