Jane Austen was underpaid, even by the standards of the day

Unlike other authors who rose to success after their deaths, Jane Austen was wildly popular with readers before her death at age 42: Mansfield Park sold out its first printing in half a year’s time. But Jezebel reports that the author was also wildly underpaid: While contemporary Maria Edgeworth, received £2,100 for her novel Patronage, Austen earned just £310 for Mansfield Park.
