Description

The Mississippi Writers Guild announces the 2015 Annual Conference July 31 – Aug. 1 in Oxford, Mississippi.

The Guild is a non-profit organization serving writers and aspiring writers. Its motto is “No writer without a voice.” The conference is open to both Guild members and non-members. “There is no requirement to attend the conference, but we hope those who do attend will join the Guild,” LaFrancis said. “This is an excellent opportunity for writers and aspiring writers to meet others who share their interests and dreams. Also, they will be able to mix and mingle with professionals and learn from them.”

Complete details and lodging information are available at www.mississippiwritersguild.com. Information also is available on the Guild’s Facebook page: Mississippi Writers Guild. Deadline is June 30 for early bird registration and July 1 for lodging. Assisting with the conference will be the Mississippi Gulf Coast Writers Association.

On Friday, Aug. 1, the Guild will host a getting-to-know-you session from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hampton Inn in Ocean Springs. Keynote speaker will be Jane Nickerson who will offer “Helping Readers Believe in Time Travel,” a program about research and historical fiction.

“Accurate research is essential to add realism and to avoid anachronism in historical fiction. It lends color and atmosphere and interest. However, in order to capture the reader, it must be carefully woven into a really great story so as not to overcome it,” said Nickerson.

That night, the Guild will salute men and women in the armed forces with a patriotic-themed gathering. Also, there will be a silent auction, door prizes, and other activities.

Formal and informal critiques of writers’ works also are available, as well as plenty of literature about writing and writers, door prizes, and other features. The Guild’s web site has complete information. Or contact LaFrancis at [email protected].
