Description
Nimrod International Journal of Prose and Poetry will host its annual Awards Celebration and Writing Workshop October 20th-21st at The University of Tulsa.
Participants are offered the opportunity to work with dozens of distinguished authors, including the judges for the annual Nimrod Literary Awards contest and other visiting artists. This year our judges are two distinguished writers—fiction writer Laura van den Berg, whose first novel, Find Me, was selected as a “Best Book of 2015” by NPR, Time Out New York, and BuzzFeed, among others, and Jericho Brown, a National Endowment for the Arts fellow, whose first book, Please, won the American Book Award in 2008. Also joining us at the conference will be fiction writer Keija Parssinen, whose debut novel, The Ruins of Us, was published in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, Italy, and the Middle East; memoirist Sasha Martin, author of Life from Scratch: A Memoir of Food, Family, and Forgiveness; mystery writer Deborah Crombie, author of Garden of Lamentations; romance author Tessa Dare, author of Do You Want to Start a Scandal; and literary agent Mark Gottlieb from Trident Media Group. They will join over thirty other writers and editors.
Nimrod Write Night will be held on Friday and will feature a VIP Author Reception as well as an Author Chat hosted by Booksmart Tulsa’s Jeff Martin. The Author Chat will be free and open to the public. The Saturday writing workshop will feature masterclasses, readings, panel discussions, and one-on-one editing sessions. Each is designed to stimulate ideas and discussion and to inspire and improve participants’ own writing. Not only will participants be able to attend classes with award-winning authors, but they will be able to interact with them on a personal level.
After one of two opening panel discussions, participants will choose from a wide array of masterclasses on writing poetry, fiction, memoir, mystery, romance, young adult fantasy, and more. Workshops and masterclasses will encourage dialogue, and many sessions will offer stimulating writing exercises. Other events throughout the day include readings, lunch, and editing sessions, in which participants will have the chance to sit down one on one with an editor to discuss their work, a feature unique to Nimrod’s conference.
Each registrant is entitled to participate in readings, panel discussions, masterclasses, and one-on-one editing sessions. The Awards Celebration will take place at 6:00 p.m. at TU’s Lorton Performance Center (more information TBA). The cost of Saturday’s conference is $60, which includes lunch. The workshop takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in TU’s Allen Chapman Student Union. Full and partial scholarships are available, but each participant must register, and those wishing one-on-one editing sessions should submit 2-3 pages of poetry or 4-5 pages of fiction by October 13th. Staff development credit is available for Tulsa Public Schools teachers.
