2022 500-Word Essay Contest Winners

Grand Prize Winner $1000: “Dog Tags,” by Michelle Y. Green

The winner of the grand prize is Michelle Y. Green, for her essay  “Dog Tags.”

Michelle is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins Master of Arts in Writing program and author of A Strong Right Arm: The Story of Mamie “Peanut” Johnson. “Dog Tags” appears in the April print edition of The Writer.

Second Place $500: “Half a Bear Hug” by Beverly Rose

Beverly’s essay, “Half a Bear Hug,” will be appearing in the June issue of The Writer.

Third Place $250:  “Mother and the Whale” by Maureen Sauvain O’Connor

Maureen’s essay,  “Mother and Whale” will be appearing in the June issue of The Writer.
