Description
Grassroots Literary Magazine is looking for authors to submit their work to our upcoming Quill & Ink Literary Festival this April 29th, 2023! Grassroots is a student-run literary magazine at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The festival is open to submissions from both traditionally- and self-published authors. The festival submissions open December 9th, 2022, and the deadline to submit is January 31st, 2023. The winners will be announced in early March of 2023.
The Quill and Ink Literary Festival is a direct descendant of the Devil’s Kitchen Literary Festival, which was held at SIU for over 15 years until 2020. Allison Joseph and Jon Tribble pioneered the Devil’s Kitchen Literary Festival until Jon’s passing in 2019, when Allison subsequently stepped away from her role in the festival’s operation. With Allison’s blessing, Grassroots has created a new literary festival to carry out our mission of championing underrepresented voices while honoring Jon’s legacy and continuing to bring esteemed authors to the SIU campus.
We are looking for works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry published between 2020-2022. Both traditionally published and self-published works will be considered for all categories, but we will be awarding a special fourth award to a standout self-published piece. We are requiring a $15 submission fee that goes towards funding the festival in order to keep the event accessible to students and the community. We will choose one winner from each category to receive a prize of $1,500. The winner must proceed to teach a workshop on a subject of the festival committee’s choosing and must provide for their own travel expenses to Southern Illinois University Carbondale. A two-night hotel stay will be provided.
In order to submit, please send an electronic PDF copy of your work along with a cover letter to [email protected]. The guidelines for the cover letter are outlined on our website. If an author must submit a physical copy of their work please e-mail us for how to do so.
