Description

Myriel Media is requesting short story submissions for our inaugural writing competition.

Many of the finest pieces of science fiction caution us about the unforeseen risks of technological progress. Dr. Ian Malcolm, Jeff Goldblum’s character in Jurassic Park, famously laments “your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” Contra Dr. Malcolm, we believe scientists often do not think enough about what they can do. We have had enough of stories seeking to discredit action, curiosity, and conviction. Instead, we wonder: what are the risks of stasis, incuriosity, and excessive hesitancy? We have been inspired by breakthroughs like the development of mRNA vaccines and their ability to dramatically improve people’s lives when things looked most dire, and we hope the stories we receive will help encourage the next generation of innovators to dream up solutions to humanity’s greatest challenges. Whether your story takes place in a society like our own or a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, we can’t wait to explore your world and meet the characters who will move us to do more than we thought we were capable of.

Submissions should be no more than 5,000 words and should be emailed as a PDF to [email protected] by November 1st, 2021 at 12pm Eastern Time. There should be no information identifying the author in the PDF, and emails should have the subject line “Short Story Submission”. The top submissions as judged by our team will receive a $100 prize and will be published by Myriel Media. Please reach out to us with any questions.
