We all know indie bookstores are invaluable for writers and readers alike. But a few bookstores around the country are taking their support of authors one step further and launching writers in residence programs, as Porter Square Books did earlier this year.
Here are three bookstores offering residency programs for writers.

Bookshop Santa Cruz
Bookshop Santa Cruz has teamed up with the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods to offer a 14-day residency in the Santa Cruz Mountains since 2014. Accommodation and “most evening meals” are provided for the duration of the residency; the author will also receive a free consultation with Bookshop Santa Cruz. However, only authors writing fiction projects are eligible to apply, and preference is given to authors from California or working on a book that is set within the state.
Applications for the 2019 residency are closed as of June 1, so check back on the Bookshop’s website early next year for details on applying for the 2020 program.
