Take a hard look at your story before submitting. What does the reader need to know? Mercilessly interrogate every aspect of your story: Is it needed? Is it relevant? Does it move the plot forward, deliver much-needed information, affect the mood or setting, or develop characters? Which sentences propel your narrative forward and which slow it down?
